District 16 – Bayshore, Bedok, Siglap, Upper East Coast Rd, Eastwood, Kew Dr
District 16 is largely a residential area which comprises Bedok, Upper East Coast Road and Chai Chee. Some commercial buildings such as Siglap Shopping Centre and Crescendo Building cater to the needs of the neighbourhood.
Introduction/History
Bedok
Bedok is a residential area in the eastern part of Singapore. It is even referred to in the 1604 Manuel Gomes de Eredia’s map of Singapore. The Bedok New Town is developed in April 1973. It is the fifth HDB new town to be developed and is still being developed even after 15 years. Bedok is one of the native names that came into existence around the time of Sir Stamford Raffles and it got its name from Sungai Bedok, a river which is part of the present Tanah Merah. Bedok New Town is built around a unique landscaped park and sports complex. With 58,000 units of HDB flats, 2,700 executive units and 583 units of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDC) flats, it is home to some 200,000 residents.
Siglap (Politically, Siglap falls under the East Coast Group Representation Constituency.)
Consisting primarily of low-rise residential properties, Siglap is a neighbourhood located in the eastern part of Singapore, and established in 1955. It falls under the Bedok Planning Area, which was developed by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
Upper East Coast Road
East Coast Road begins at the junction of Tanjong Katong Road and Mountbatten Road, extending towards Upper East Coast Road and forms a junction with Siglap Road before ending at Bedok Road. Bounded by the Siglap area, it consists of private apartments and residential estates.
Chai Chee
Within Bedok New Town is a neighbourhood called Chai Chee, formerly known as Kampong Chai Chee. In Chai Chee there are two major roads, namely Chai Chee Street and Chai Chee Drive; and two minor lanes, namely Chai Chee Road and Chai Chee Avenue. Chai Chee is now a modern residential estate situated north of Siglap, east of Kembangan and west of Bedok New Town. The Chai Chee Bus Terminal has ceased operations and all services have been moved to Bedok Bus Interchange. The terminal is now replaced by new high-rise residential blocks.
Amenities/Facilities
In Siglap, there are two community centres: Siglap Community Centre and Siglap South Community Centre. Several restaurants, food courts and shops line East Coast Road and Upper East Coast Road. The Siglap Shopping Centre is the biggest mall in Siglap.
Landmarks such as Crescendo Building, The Emmanuel Assembly of God Church, Chai Chee Secondary School, Temasek Primary School and Temasek Secondary School are located at Upper East Coast Road.
The Chai Chee neighbourhood has primary and secondary schools, a vocational institute, a mosque, a church and many multinational firms.
Transportation
District 16 is served by the Bedok MRT Station, the Bedok Interchange Bus Station, Tanah Merah MRT Station and Kembangan MRT Station MRT Station.
